Description

Ford refreshed the entire Focus range for the 2001 model year, and along with the hatchbacks and the sedan, it also updated the station wagon version, which was just two years old.

Starting in 2001, Europe switched to the Euro 3 emission standards, so Ford used that opportunity to update the rest of the car. Besides the drivetrains, the blue-oval brand also refreshed the exterior and the interior of the Focus Wagon, which became even more appealing thanks. However, those who bought the base trim level of the car couldn’t notice significant differences compared to the initial model that Ford introduced in 1999. But still, despite the unusual look, the car sold in big numbers thanks to the features it provided and the fuel-efficient engines.

Like its stablemates, the 2001 Ford Focus Wagon came with a refreshed front fascia. The clear-lenses headlights were available with Xenon brights, which was unusual for a mass-market, compact-sized vehicle. In addition, the blue-oval brand moved the turn signal lamps from the lower bumper into the lower inner corners of the triangular headlamps. As a result, the bumper had to be refreshed, and it now sported an air dam that integrated a broad trapezoidal-shaped air intake in the lower area, while two side scoops housed the redesigned angular fog lamps. Previously, these were rounded.

From its profile, the car retained its flared wheel arches on both axles and at first sight, it didn’t look that different from its predecessor. However, a keen eye for detail could notice the clear-lenses turn signal lamps mounted on the front fenders. The long-roof version of the vehicle couldn’t pass as a coupe or a shooting brake, but still, the car manufacturer added black trims for the windows. In addition, the automaker offered the car new options for alloy wheels. At the back, customers could notice another significant difference in the vertical-mounted turn signal lamps that flanked the wide and tall tailgate opening.

Inside, fronting the driver was the same elliptic-shaped instrument cluster, filled with the same large dials for the speedometer and tachometer and flanked by the gauges for the fuel and coolant temperature. Like its stablemates, the 2001 Ford Focus Wagon was available with cloth or leather upholstery, even though customers had to dig deeper in their pockets for the latter version. On the center stack, the car manufacturer installed a stereo cassette player just below the oval-shaped central vents.

Under the hood, at first sight, there were no noticeable differences between the 1999 model year and the 2001 Ford Focus Wagon versions. However, the torque was slightly increased for the base, 1.4-liter gasoline powerplant. Furthermore, the automaker understood that the company had to adapt, so it introduced not just one but six engines on the offer. The engine ranged between 75 PS (74 hp) and 130 PS (129 hp). In addition, Ford installed its newest oil-burner powerplant, which, thanks to its common rail system, could get astonishing mileage on a single diesel fuel tank.
